Self-help and Team Work

Whilst women and children carry water from distant sources, men discuss implementation of a self help water supply scheme

The ethos of community based self-help development schemes are intended not to look at oneself as an individual or family, but as a community. Through self-help, the community develops the essentially egalitarian relationship, giving personalized people-to-people style of work, and a sense of ownership of the finished work. Maintenance of the finished product is a collective and mutual responsibility.

What are the benefits?

  • Teamwork promotes bonding
  • Enhances common purpose
  • Instils a sense of belonging
  • Sense of ownership
  • Responsibility awareness
  • Good citizenship
  • Feel good factor
