KYEMA  WATER  PROJECT

FAITH  IN  ACTION

(MELTHAM METHODIST CHURCH)

  1. PROJECT HISTORY

Project conceived in 1988 after a personal visit (by John Bakanoba) to Kyema in Uganda. A cry for help from a war torn community with no water.

The story was told and received by a Christian Community at Meltham, Huddersfield with instant practical response, enough money was raised to get the project off the ground.

  1. PROJECT CONCEPT

A need was seen and recognised by people who identified with those in need, and were willing to help them on a bilateral basis. That is to say, the people being helped, would have to do all the work themselves.

It was a project of Purpose, Outreach and Result. It inspired people to work together. Both churches and local charitable orgainsations saw something to work at together and produce results.

  1. LOCAL SUCCESS

Money raised in four years - approximately £12,000.

Many obstacles were faced and overcome, including slow communication. Money was eventually and successfully channeled to the point of need. £3,000 was spent on water supply.

  1. FURTHER WORK

Mains electricity supplied, community centre encouraged, work of caring increased. Closer Christian links established, resulting in an Ecumenical Goodwill Mission from Meltham to visit Kyema (July 1992), to see progress of project. Positive links established.

  1. DONOR PRESENCE AT KYEMA

The faces of the people who raised the money mattered and gave hope for a future to a people who needed encouragement.

  1. LINKING LIVES

Future links include possible twinning between    Masindi and Meltham. Cultural and commercial exchanges are envisaged giving rise to development of markets for craft and agricultural produce.

Church and school links are already in place.

THE KYEMA WATER PROJECT
